Elementary Education: Building Foundations for the Future

In our Elementary program, we embrace the uniqueness of each child, offering small class sizes and individualized educational plans from PreK4 to 4th grade. Our approach goes beyond academic excellence, fostering holistic development through a variety of enrichment classes. Here, students explore Music, Drama, ASL, Spanish, Physical Education, and Bible studies. This rich tapestry of learning experiences is crafted to ignite creativity, encourage imagination, and instill a deep-seated passion for exploration and discovery.

Our tight-knit community ethos ensures that our students don’t just learn together; they grow together, caring for one another and building a supportive, family-like environment.

Early Childhood: A Compassionate Gateway to Learning

The journey begins in our Early Childhood program, where experienced educators guide our youngest learners. Our multidisciplinary curriculum, encompassing Bible studies, literacy, mathematics, science, and social studies, lays a solid foundation for all-round development. We integrate writing and vocabulary development into daily instruction, balancing active and quiet periods to cater to both individual and group learning styles.

Specialized classes in Physical Education, Spanish, Music, Computing, and Library Science enrich the preschool experience. Our weekly chapel service is a time of communal spiritual growth, binding our young ones in shared values and experiences.

Extracurricular Activities: Nurturing Talents Beyond the Classroom

At The Hill School, learning extends beyond the traditional classroom. Our extracurricular offerings include a range of sports like cheerleading, flag football, basketball, and baseball. These activities are tailored to foster teamwork, physical health, and sportsmanship.

Additionally, our unique Sooie Club offers childcare during home Razorback football games, providing a fun and safe environment for children aged 6 weeks to 8 years. For busy parents, we also provide an after-school care program at both our preschool and elementary campuses, ensuring a seamless, nurturing experience for your child beyond school hours.

Core Curriculum Highlights

The goal of our elementary program is to prepare your student for the future by laying a solid foundation of learning.

Academics

At The Hill School, we prioritize a balanced education where academic growth and spiritual development coalesce. Our mission is to cultivate young individuals who are not only intellectually enriched but also spiritually grounded, guiding them towards a life filled with wisdom, knowledge, and a faith-based perspective.

Reading

Our approach to teaching reading is comprehensive and multi-faceted, covering key areas such as phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Through expert guidance, small group exercises, and the utilization of graphic organizers, we equip students with essential reading skills. Across all elementary grade levels, our primary objective is to cultivate critical thinking skills in relation to written text.

History

At The Hill School, students from PreK4 to 2nd grade explore the world around them through customized units crafted by our dedicated teachers, with Abeka textbooks serving as a supplementary guide. In the 3rd grade, the Abeka curriculum is used to delve into the lives of notable American heroes, culminating in an interactive Wax Museum event at the end of the year. The 4th-grade curriculum intertwines American history—from the discovery of America to World War II—with reading comprehension exercises. In 5th grade, the focus shifts to both Arkansas and U.S. history, spanning from the Civil War era to the Civil Rights Movement. To enrich this historical learning, students engage with historical fiction novels that correspond with the historical timeline they are studying. Arkansas history is a consistent theme across all grade levels. Key concepts like patriotism, democracy, and freedom are integral elements of our social studies program.

Afterschool Care

Afterschool Care offers a valuable solution for households where both parents have jobs away from home. The program is open to children from Pre-K4 up to 5th grade. Operating right after school until 5:30pm, the program is available at both the Joyce and Crossover Campuses. Participating students receive a snack, complete their homework, and enjoy an array of engaging activities. The daily fee is $25.

Mathematics

Mathematics extends beyond mere rote learning of facts. It involves a comprehensive understanding that is nurtured through hands-on object manipulation, strategic problem-solving methods, cyclical reviews, mental calculations, and consistent practice exercises to achieve math fluency. Students come to recognize the practical applications of math in everyday life. Age-appropriate concepts are integrated at each educational stage, serving as valuable life tools.

Writing

From their early years, children are introduced to the significance of written communication. In kindergarten, they start by creating journals. In first and second grades, they progress to crafting complete sentences and paragraphs. By the time they reach third to fifth grades, they are skilled in composing summaries, paragraphs, and essays.

Science

In science courses from PreK4 to 5th grade, students learn to collect, sort, measure, and analyze data about the natural world, viewed through the perspective of Genesis 1:28. Utilizing inquiry-based learning approaches, pupils formulate hypotheses, conduct experiments, and arrive at conclusions. Each grade focuses on objectives suitable for that age group, covering areas such as life science, physical science, earth science, ecology, and technology.

Bible

Every morning, young students engage in exploring spiritual teachings by memorizing verses, learning biblical stories, and relating these teachings to everyday experiences. The curriculum focuses on key principles such as the nature of the Divine, the cosmic blueprint for humanity, the imperfections and flawed nature of mankind, our role as reflections of the Divine, salvation through the teachings of Jesus Christ, and the anticipation of His return.
